Northport Power StationIn the winter of 2002, a key fuel oil supply line at the Northport Power Station experienced a freeze up. To deal with the emergency, insulation was removed from the pipe at the blockage, a shelter was built, and heaters were set up to blow hot air onto the frozen section. But the plant operators knew that once the emergency was over, the heat tracing on the pipe would need some serious help. Their first call for help went to the manufacturers who had originally supplied the system thirty years earlier. A representative came to the site, took a quick look at the cable connections, announced that the system was obsolete and needed to be replaced, and got back in his car.
